30 September 2026
Today is Moods Holistic Counselling’s third anniversary.
On 30 September 2023, I was newly qualified, still volunteering for a charity in King’s Lynn and seeing one client online.
I wasn't entirely convinced I could make a go of having my own practice but after five years of studying, I had to at least give it a try.
The plan had always been to work online, I already had one online client, so surely I just needed to wait for someone else to find me in the directory.
So I waited
and waited.
There were definitely moments during that first year when I came very close to giving up.
Then My fairy godmother appeared in the form of Anita Grodkiewicz ,
“ I can always find you a space in the (Rosmini) centre, you might have to shift about a bit, though”.
That's all I needed to hear
I quickly changed my listing to online or in person and a couple of months later, I welcomed my first face to face client.
I was counselling !!!
and I absolutely loved my job.
Not long after that, I started talking to my husband, Dean about converting our garage into a counselling room.
We made a plan and a budget.
I made a shopping list full of the lovely furniture and cosy things I wanted, while he made one of the slightly more sensible lists of all the practical things required to make my fantasy shopping list actually work.
We gave ourselves about a year to get it finished, particularly as the entire roof needed replacing first.
In the meantime I happily carried on seeing clients.
One or two a week might not sound like many, but I was genuinely grateful for every single person who chose to sit down with me and trust me with part of their story.
Then came the devastating news that the centre was closing.
I won't go into the whole reasons behind it but this was somewhere that was an integral part of our community and losing it meant losing the room I was working from too.
I went home after work the day Anita told me and said to Dean
“we need to put a rush job on the room”
Thankfully, the roof had already been done. Dean gave up his weekends to decorate and make space for me. There was not a lot left in the pot for furniture, so I ‘repurposed’ some garden furniture for clients to sit on, found a cute little coffee table and bought a folding screen that reminded me of the old fashioned hospital ones to screen off the storage part of the room. Admittedly it was the most cosy room but it was mine.
Was it the fanciest counselling room in the world?
Errm, no!!!
But it was cosy
it was welcoming
and more importantly, it was mine
Over the past year, the room has grown along with the practice
The garden furniture has been replaced with a much more comfortable sofa and chairs ( pre-loved £100 bargain!!!)
Little bits and bobs have been added here and there and slowly but surely my client base and appointment book have grown too.
One of the biggest changes came after my own ADHD diagnosis
Choosing to specialise in neurodivergence was one of the best decisions I have made for Moods - probably second only to opening my practice in the first place.
Since then, I have had the privilege of working with some wonderful people who are navigating their own journeys of understanding, discovering and accepting their own neurodivergence.
Some have finished counselling and moved on
Others are still working things through with me
A few I’m still supporting as and when they need me
Every single one of them has been part of the Moods story
I’m incredibly proud to be a counsellor and to have my own Practice with a specialism that means so much to me. I genuinely love my job.
Moods has changed a lot in the last three years.
So have I
Happy third anniversary to Moods Holistic Counselling.
I look forward to welcoming new clients for the foreseeable future.
Here’s to whatever comes next - ( non alcoholic) Cheers . 🥂
